Heavenly Gems was not created as just a business. It was built from personal loss, lived experience, and a clear belief that meaningful jewellery should be accessible to everyone.

In 2020, Kelsey lost her mother suddenly and without warning. It was an incredibly difficult time for the whole family. Like many people going through loss, she wanted something personal to hold onto, something that would keep that connection close.

At the time, we began looking into memorial jewellery. What we found was disappointing. Many of the available options were priced far beyond what we could afford, especially during such a difficult period.

That moment became the starting point.

Taking matters into her own hands

Rather than accepting that it was out of reach, Kelsey decided to learn how to create it herself.

She invested time into online courses, carried out extensive research, and tested multiple suppliers to ensure quality. This was not rushed. It was a process of learning, refining, and perfecting a craft that needed to be done properly.

Eventually, she created her first piece using her mother’s ashes.

It was never intended to be a business. It was something deeply personal.

But after sharing it with friends and family, everything changed.

From personal piece to growing demand

The response was immediate. Friends and family began asking Kelsey to create pieces for them, memorial jewellery for their own loved ones, as well as custom jewellery for special occasions such as weddings.

What started as something private quickly became something others needed too.

It became clear that there was a gap. People wanted meaningful, high quality jewellery, but without the excessive pricing that often came with it.

Making memorial jewellery accessible

From that point, Kelsey set a clear goal.

To make memorial jewellery accessible to everyone.

Not just for those with larger budgets, but for anyone who wanted to keep a loved one close without compromising on quality or care.

That belief became the foundation of Heavenly Gems.

Since 2020, the business has grown steadily through word of mouth, built on trust, quality, and genuine care. The range of pieces has expanded, offering more choice while staying true to the original purpose.

Where Leigh came in

As the business grew, so did the need for support behind the scenes.

That is where I, Leigh, became more involved. I now manage the engraving side of the business, along with building and maintaining the website and supporting the day to day operations. This allows Kelsey to focus fully on what she does best, creating each piece with the attention and care it deserves.

We have four children, and our eldest daughter, Ayla Mae Hemms, lives with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Ayla requires full time care and has taught us more about strength, resilience, and perspective than we could ever put into words.

She is now 13, and every moment with her is something we truly value.

Living this life has shaped our outlook. We understand how emotionally and physically challenging things can be, and that is why giving back is so important to us.

Over the years, we have raised thousands of pounds for children with cerebral palsy and for Trinity Fields School, supporting causes that are close to home.

More than just jewellery
